Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, characterized by cellular infiltration and exudation.
Two types of conjunctivitis –
·        Infective conjunctivits
·        Allergic conjunctivitis.
Diagnosis of Conjnuctivitis
1.     The history.
2.     Clinical examination, and
3.     Laboratory investigations.

 The History
·        Unilateral or bilateral .
·        Involvement of the other members of the family of community.
·        Exposure to toxins, or chemicals.
·        Associated symptoms – e.g; fever, pharyngitis, rhinitis, urethritis etc.
Clinical Examinations
·        The type of discharge.
·        The characterstics of conjunctival reaction and
·        Pre-auricular lymphadenopathy.

Laboratory investigations
·        Severe purulent conjunctivitis- to indetify the pathogens sensitivity pattern.
·        Follicular conjunctivitis- to differentiate viral from chlamydial infection.
·        Chronic or recurrent conjunctivitis- to find out aetiological diagnosis.
·        Opthalmia neonatorum.
