What is age related macular degeneration (AMD) ?
- Causes poor vision by affecting the area of the retina affecting central, fine, colour vision. This area is called the Macula.
- There are 2 forms: ‘Dry’ and ‘Wet’: Dry AMD: develops slowly, gradual vision impairment. It is the most common form of AMD. Wet AMD: develops more rapidly, occurs when abnormal vessels develop beneath the retina and bleed.
What are the risk factor of ARMD ?
- Age—especially after 50 years, Family history, Smoking, obesity, diet (less fruits and vegetables increases risk), high blood pressure, heart and arterial disease.
What are the symptoms of AMD?
- Blurred or distorted vision, Difficulty seeing colours, Reduced central vision, Slow recovery of visual function after exposure to bright light.
Diagnosis of ARMD
- Examination of your retina, Testing of central vision, Angiogram (injection of a coloured dye that shows the abnormal vessels in your eye), Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) – which displays the layers of your retina.
Treatment of ARMD
- AMD cannot be cured. But treatment may slow progression.
- This includes a combination of medications to stop abnormal blood vessels growing your eye, using retinal laser, or using light to activate injected medication.
Prevention of ARMD
- Stop smoking, Eat fruits and vegetables, Include fish in your diet, maintain healthy weight, daily exercise.
